Anonymous asked:Why is 888 the number of the messiah?
wheatsale replied:

aardwolfpack:

It comes from Christian numerology, based on pagan Greek numerology.

Like the Romans and Hebrews (but unlike the handy Arabs) the Greeks had a number system that used letters from their alphabet rather than unique symbols.  Incidentally, the Greek number system retained the letter Digamma long after it had fallen out of use as a letter.  Even the letters that weren’t usually used as numbers each had a numeric value.  Jesus’ name in Greek is “Iesous” (Iota Eta Sigma Omicron Upsilon Sigma), which adds up to 888 by this system.  Since much older Greek traditions assigned supernatural significance to the number 888, this looked like another prophecy fulfilled.

The Book of Revelation, in usual cryptic form, leaves out the name of the Great Beast but says the numbers of its letters add up to 666.  This has led to almost two millennia of speculation.
